The Importance of UX in Technology Development

Some technologists focus only on the engineering end. They feel that the code and algorithm optimization are all that matter. While they are essential, we often forget one critical feature that probably matters more:

We build technology to help humans. If the interface for that technology isn’t intuitive or creates more cognitive overhead than it improves, the solution’s value is far more limited. While open-source is a valuable option in today’s software world, some of these tools are hindered by engineers’ UX designs, limiting their opportunities. Unfortunately, it also happens with commercial software too.

Ignoring the human interface and user experience is unfortunately far more common in many software projects. Sometimes it is the mistaken belief that “design costs too much” or “our engineers can build the UX”. In truth, good user experience design can be a critical differentiator for your product.

Bringing design thinking into the development process early often makes the difference between a successful launch and a failed product. As AI-generated code becomes more prevalent, the lack of UX design is even more apparent.
